Haunted House is a blurry dream of somewhere you used to know every inch of, a trail of breadcrumbs through family ghost stories and slowly-decomposing home videos. A dark night, a childhood home, and something caught half-visible in the periphery of your vision. Through hand-made lace, rotoscoped archival footage, and stop-motion mixed-media collage, the piece burrows deep into cycles of grief, longing, and the distorting hand of time.
The film was created out of love for telling ghost stories, crafting fibre art, and my grandmother, who was very skilled at both and shared both with me. I shot it in spring 2023 in one of the farmhouses I grew up in, though the house the film is about has been demolished for fifteen years.
After filming on location, I spent almost an entire year designing and creating the hand-crocheted lace pieces for the film (all of which, yes, I tore apart while animating). During this time I also combed through twenty years of home videos, finding footage to rotoscope into the house.
Making this film was a long and at-times agonizing séance/labour of love. I hope it takes you to what is left of that house, in story and memory and the tangle between them.
